INSIDE THE LIVERPOOL CARE HOMES BATTLING TRAGEDY
NHS England has announced 429 further deaths from the coronavirus in its hospitals, taking the overall UK death toll to 16,489.
These statistics don't include additional deaths in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which will be factored in shortly.
In its statement today, NHS England said: "Patients were aged between 40 and 101 years old. 15 of the 429 patients (aged between 49 and 92 years old) had no known underlying health condition.
"Their families have been informed."
Today's update showed that the North West region was the worst affected in terms of new deaths, with 112 recorded, higher than London (81) and the Midlands (67) which have both been very badly hit by the virus.
While the numbers are known to drop after a weekend, the sharp fall will add to a growing feeling that the UK's epidemic may be starting to stabilise.
Experts continue to urge caution when it comes to the daily updates, but people will undoubtedly be quietly hopeful about the falling numbers.
Today's latest figures come as new research suggesting that far more people have had the coronavirus without any symptoms, fuelling hope that it will turn out to be much less lethal than originally feared.
